03/07/09 – Plastic Recylcing Scheme Extended

The fortnightly plastic recycle collection has been extended from just plastic bottles to a fortnightly collection of household mixed plastics. By mixed plastics we mean items such as:

• Plastic bottles


• Margerine tubs


• Ice cream tubs


• Yoghurt pots


• Plastic bags


• Cling film and other plastic food wrapping film


• Biscuit trays


• Cake trays


• Meat trays


• Fruit and vegetable trays


• Plastic take-away tubs

All mixed household plastic should be placed in either a clear (transparent) or white sack. Please do not use sacks of any other colour. These must be placed at the nearest point of your property to the highway by 7.30am on your day of collection. The bag should be sealed or tied up.

White pedal bin liners that you can get from most supermarkets are a cheap and effective way of bagging up the plastic materials … but make sure they are full up in order to be as cost-effective as possible.

Please note:

1. You should not include:

• Any item of black plastic.


• Plastic toys


• Plant pots


• Plastic furniture


• Buckets


• Hard plastic storage containers (e.g. sandwich and lunch boxes)


• Washing up bowls.

2. Only er household items should be included. Bulky items such as garden furniture can be disposed of at the Household Waste Recycling Centre. Generally, the type of things you can include are plastic items that you’d normally keep in either your kitchen or bathroon and which have contained food, drink or household cleaning/washing products.

3. Any plastic materials that you put out for recycling must be washed and clean. Dirty items will not be collected as these would contaminate the other items to be recycled.

4. Be wary of putting out plastics for recycling on windy days. Plastic materials tend to be lightweight and can often be blown around the streets, even when bagged up.
